With the start of a new year, we set ourselves new challenges and resolutions. Reducing our environmental impact and improving energy efficiency can be one of them, and… How to achieve this?

Before discussing some of the tips for becoming more sustainable it is important to be clear and define what sustainability is and what it means to be sustainable.

Sustainability is defined as the most appropriate way of managing resources to meet our current needs without compromising future needs. On the other hand, being sustainable implies being aware that the environment and nature are not inexhaustible and therefore we must make a rational use of them.

What can we do to be more sustainable in 2023? Here are a few tips:

  1. Calculate your carbon footprint and identify how to reduce it: to do this, we need to be aware of the amount of greenhouse gases we generate on a daily basis. It may be more or less depending on the means of transport we use to get around or the way we consume electricity.
  2. Use public transport and go for electric and smoke-free mobility. It is expected that in the future combustion engines will be banned and only electric engines will be used to reduce polluting emissions.
  3. Reduce, reuse and recycle: the famous “3Rs” rule is becoming increasingly important. Reduce the amount of products we throw away, find new ways of using objects so that they are not thrown away and convert objects that we no longer need into new ones that can be reused.
  4. Sustainable tourism, because travelling and respecting the environment are two totally compatible concepts. In this case, it is important to prioritise sustainable mobility. In order from least polluting to most polluting, the bicycle, the train, the boat, the car and the plane would be the most polluting.
  5. Choose “eco-friendly” packaging: it is ecological and environmentally friendly. This concept has emerged as a response to pollution.
